A memorial museum in Chapayev's paternal home was established on the initiative of his comrades-in-arms. The legendary military leader of the 1917-1922 Civil War in Russia was born in the former outskirts of Balakovo. That was the town of his childhood and youth. The exposition of the memorial museum presents a reconstruction of the house furnishing; most of the family photos and personal things have been contributed by Chapayev's daughter and son. The museum is peculiar for its collection of documents, photos and things pertinent to Chapayev's fellows in arms and the famous 25th division that used to operate under his command. Some exhibits give an account of its activities during the Great Patriotic war of 1941-1945
