The museum has arisen on the basis of a school museum founded by teacher-enthusiast Yelkin M.G. Since 1948 till 1972 the pupils conducted more than 20 archeological, paloentological, geological and other dispathes on the south of Kuzbass. On the basу of the assembled collections includes departments: Nature, Archeology, Ethnography and History of Prokopievsk. There exists an exhibition hall

The museum is the centre of methodical work on local history both for pupils and students of the city and area.
