Description:

The Fersman mineralogical museum RAS is one of the largest and exciting amongst the mineral museums in the world. The museum world-wide collection comprehends over 135 000 itmes. The include mineral specimens, gemstones, lapidary pieces, meteorites and much more.

The museum was established in 1716 in St.-Petersburg as a "Mineral cabinet" of the Kunstkammer. Since 1725 it was supported by the Russian Academy of Science. They both were moved from Leningrad (formerly St.-Petersburg) to Moscow in 1934. It was and is, accommodated in the historical building which represents Moscow architecture of the beginning XIX century. That was built for Count Orlov-Chesmensky as a menage, to accommodate riding hall and stables. Under Emperor Nicholas I the building was used as an out-of-town dancing hall for the Russian Court
