Museum of contemporary art GARAGE is the first project organized by Iris Foundation, a non-profit organization, dedicated to development and support of the arts, carrying on the tradition of patronage practice once widely celebrated in pre-revolutionary Russia.
Founded in 2008 by Daria Zhukova, Iris Foundation is dedicated to promote the understanding and development of contemporary culture, by exhibiting established and emerging artists in Moscow, supporting Russian and international artists throughout worldwide exhibitions and fairs, and organizing educational programs on contemporary culture, art, design, architecture, fashion and photography.
Ultimately, Iris Foundation plans to establish the first institute for contemporary art in Moscow, an equivalent to which is not yet existent in Russia.
Housed in the masterpiece of 20th century- the former Bakhmetevsky Bus Garage- designed in 1926 by the constructivist architect Konstantin Melnikov, currently Garage is the largest exhibition space in Moscow. Alongside exhibition galleries, Garage houses a bookstore, cinema and a caf? on 8500 sq meters, and hosts special on-site events such as talks, lectures, film screenings, panel discussions and other cultural activities
