Museum of Natural History (SVKNII DVO RAN) was open on May 18, 1977. Since then, the number of its visitors has been about 80,000 people. The museum expositions are placed over the total area of 400 m2 including the geologic exposition on the first floor (214 m2), the mineralogical exposition on the third floor (144 m2) and the archeological and ethnographic exposition (40 m2) there. The total number of the museum units is about 5250 including 3950 exposed ones. The museum expositions consist of unique geologic-mineralogical and ethnographic-archeological collections, which represent a complicated developmental history of the North-East, its mineral wealth and objects of a peculiar research interest, such as meteorites and astroblemes, and also elucidate the cultural traditions of the natives there.
The Museum is always open for the visitors, which are mainly students and guests of Magadan. The Museum specialists guide the excursions. The Museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (by a prior appointment) all days, except Saturday and Sunday, and, on May 18, that is the International Day of Museums, it is open for any interested person.
