The Baikal Museum of Irkutsk Scientific Center of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences received the status of an independent research institution in 1993 year. Studies of the Museum are concentrated on evolution of the ecosystem of Lake Baikal according to the following directions:The study of morphological features, species composition, population structure and life cycles of fish, parasitic organisms Baikal, seals and birds; Development of the on-line system of collection and transfer of information about Lake Baikal and Baikal area; Introduction of methods of innovative technologies representations of the fundamental knowledge about Lake Baikal.

    Expositional and educational activities of the Baikal Museum are conducted at the expositions "Development of life in the process of abiotic changes in the Earth", "Aquariums", "Baikal Seal on-line", "Alive Baikal world under the microscope", "Virtual diving", "Dendropark", "Underwater researches of Baikal. History and modernity", "Deep water manned vehicle "Pisces XI". Since 2008 year Environmental Education Center has been open, Summer School and case studies on the ecology and Baikal Study are held
