Description:
The Nekrasov Apartment Museum opened in 1946 in the apartment of the great Russian poet Nickolay Nekrasov on Liteiny (Foundry) Avenue, in the house which changed its owners many times since the end of the eighteenth century. N. Nekrasov lived here for the last 20 years of his life (1857-1877). Famous writer A. Kraevsky and his daughter were the last owners of the house. This is the reason why part of the Museum premises is regarded as the Kraevsky Part. It is used for exhibitions of modern St. Petersburg artists and collectors. Nekrasov's apartment also housed the editorial office of the two best Russian magazines of the second half of the nineteenth century: Sovremennik (The Contemporary) started by Pushkin in 1836, and Otechestvennye Zapiski (The Domestic Notes). Best Russian writers of that period visited this apartment: I. Turgenev, L. Tolstoy, A. Ostrovsky, F. Dostoyevsky, M. Saltykov-Shchedrin, I. Goncharov and others. N. Chernyshevsky and N. Dobrolyubov worked at the editorial office. According to one of Nekrasov's contemporaries, "the history of these rooms is the history of literary relations of the entire epoch, the history of Russian journalism".

The Museum exhibition tells about life and creativity of Nekrasov and his contemporaries in the epoch which succeeded Pushkin's times. In the rooms of the Museum one can see works of outstanding Russian artists: I. Kramskoi and K. Gorbunov, documentary photographs, memorial things and household items emphasizing Nekrasov's passion for hunting. In 1985 rooms where I. Panaev (Nekrasov's co-editor and best friend) lived were restored and became known as Panaev's Part of the Museum. They tell about life and work of this remarkable writer, poet and journalist
