The Kyakhya museum of local lore of academician V.A.Obruchev is one of the oldest museums of Siberia and Far East. It was founded in 1890 year by local intelligentsia and merchants and it was unique Institute for Scientific Research in Transbaycal still 20th years of XX century. The museum activity work was connected with the scientists - searches of Central Asia: G.N. and A.V.Potanins, P.K.Kozlov, V.F.Obruchev, and with the local students of the region: U.D.Talko-Grintsevich, P.S.Mihno and others. The Kyakhta museum with the academicals expeditions participates in the archaeological studies of the Asian hunnu's cenotaphs.

    Now, the funds of the museum contain more than 120000 exhibits. There are natural studies, the articles of the material and mental cultures of the peoples populated the South Transbaycal from Deep Ancient, and articles of Mongolia, China, and Japan too. The museum has got the interesting collection of the history of the Tea Road.

    The museum complex composes of 11 buildings, the memories of the history and the architecture among them. The museum is disposed in the building of the late town school.
