The museum was founded in 1918 on the initiative of the local cooperative organization "Kreditsoyuz". This period was the beginning of acquisition of valuable collections of shoes and shoe materials on the history of production. In 1926 occurred the first reorganization, the museum received a new name - "Cooperative Handicraft Production and Agricultural Museum of Kymric "Selpromsoyuz"". In 1939 it got at the disposal of the building on the street. Uritskogo 8, where it settles today.

    In 1977 the museum became a branch of the Tver State United Museum. In 1981 Kimry museum was opened after reconstruction. The permanent exposition was opened in July 1990, it introduces to people the province's history from ancient times to the present day. The exposition is rich in interiors, according to old photographs taken the panorama "Glorious Kimry village". Museum collection of shoes is one of the richest in the country. Cobbler's trade is expanded by the unique works of sculptor I.M. Abalyaev. Kymric region is the birthplace of the outstanding Soviet aircraft designer A.N. Tupolev.
